摘要

The 2010 revelations about unethical human clinical trials that took place in Guatemala during the 1940s briefly caught national media attention, shining a spotlight on the ways vulnerable people can be hurt by unscrupulous or uninformed trial sponsors and investigators. From 1946 to 1948, US funds supported a purported treatment study that intentionally infected about 1,300 Guatemalan prisoners, psychiatric patients, and sex workers with sexually transmitted diseases without their consent. Only about half of the study participants received therapeutic treatment; others received placebo or inferior standards of care.
