It's hard to say where we'd be without internal combustion engines. Predecessors were external combustion (steam) engines and electric motors, and the three vied for prominence in the early days of the automobile. As far as market share, each had a specific slice. Electrics were the easiest to drive, although they were the most limited in speed and range. Steam-powered cars certainly were the most complex to start and run, requiring the driver to deal with a pilot light and a burner to get things started and keep an eye on the system's temperatures and pressures while driving. Firing up a gasoline-powered car was easier, but not easy. Opening the fuel shut-off valve, setting the choke, setting the magneto timing, and turning the engine over with the cranking handle weren't convenient steps. As many of these became automated, and therefore easier, the internal combustion system provided the combination of factors that eventually dominated the market.
