Around the edges of this role I confront my own questions I tell them be ready for human suffering know what you believe know where your hope lies They look at me with questioning eyes. I stare back with knowing. but what do I really know of suffering of pain of the reasons not explicit I just know that it is, hear it in the voices, in moments, in stories, untold, retold, forgotten. Stories of betrayal, confusion, despair. Stories of courage, compassion, understanding-perhaps these are the most important; I tell them. At the edge of unknowing, this I do know: That hope is fragile, a frail strand clinging in a moving current but it does exist and persist and we must know it.
