摘要

The term "urban greening" means different things to different people To most, it speaks to the restoration or introduction of vitality to urban areas where plants and public green space have a minimal presence in people's lives. Our commitment to urban greening is as much about undoing the negative environmental impacts of urbanization as it is about improving the lives of those who live and work in cities. The health of our cities is clearly an issue that affects all of us; back in 1999, the UnitedNations made the observation that over 50 percent of the human population now lives in cities. Cleveland Botanical Garden's Thriving in the City plant evaluation project is a significant way in which we fulfill our commitment to making a positive impactin the critical field of urban greening. The goal of this project is to identify plants that will perform well in urban settings with minimal inputs (soil amendments, water, fertilizers or pest control) while contributing maximum vigor, beauty, and environmental benefits. The use of native plants is considered a best practice among urban greening professionals; native plants are the special focus of what will become a regular series of plant evaluations.
