This fall, Cleveland Botanical Garden announced its partnership with Kent State University's Liquid Crystal Institute — renowned internationally as the pioneering scientific center for research in the field — to design and construct research greenhouses on the Gardens campus. The idea to pursue research into liquid crystal technology's efficacy in greenhouses grew from the simple notion that tempering the Garden's 18,000 sq. ft. Eleanor Armstrong Smith Glasshouse is a challenge. In fact, the Glasshouse accounts for more than 50 percent of the Garden's overall utility costs.
