General Motors says it will eliminate emissions from new light-duty vehicles it sells by 2035, positioning the largest US automaker to transition into an electric vehicle (EV) giant. The goal — which points to big risks for oil demand in the world’s largest oil-consuming nation — is part of GM’s broader plans to achieve net-zero carbon emissions. This goal includes decarbonizing GM’s own operations and energy purchases (Scope 1 and 2 emissions) by 2040, on top of the target for decarbonizing its customers’ emissions (Scope 3) five years earlier.
