This editorial intends to give a survey on unconventional, unique applications of cyclodextrins, each based on their high selectivity and efficacy in recognizing and binding naturally occurring lipophiles. Earlier we have summarized the effect of “empty" cyclodextrins on the viral and bacterial infections through complexing cholesterol resulting in a novel way for anti-HIV treatment ("chemical condom") [1] as well as the extreme success of Sugammadex, the special g-cyclodextrin derivative used for antagonizing rocuronium and vecuronium thus revolutionizing the anesthesiology [2]. The case studies selected from the latest literature for the present review, are thought to be further illustrative examples on how specially tailored, un-loaded, “empty" cyclodextrins can be used for engineering protein holes and for significantly altering the physiological functions of living organisms.
