According to Florian Graichen, business development manager for Biorizon, producers of renewable aromatics should look to do more than just provide plant-based alternatives to existing materials. "We believe there is more potential in performance applications," he said, explaining that bio-based materials "have a chance of producing a game changing new material or new performance." He argued that biomass feedstocks offer a number of potential advantages of which the industry so far has not availed itself. For instance, while petroleum-based chemicals offer materials developers basically just two elements (carbon and hydrogen) to play with, and these for the most part are available in just two structures (linear chains and rings). Biobased feedstocks, on the other hand, contain significant proportions of nitrogen and oxygen as well, and also offer more varied structures. According to Graichen, this could give chemists a wide variety of new options for making new performance materials.
