Human papilloma viruses (HPV) are specific for squamous epithelium for their replication although they are able to infect columnar cells of the endocrine and respiratory epithelium.1 The commonest outcome of HPV infection in humans is latent infection. The second possible outcome of HPV infection is the formation of a benign papilloma or wart and third outcome is conversion of a benign papilloma to a malignant carcinoma. This is extremely rare even with high-risk HPV types such as 16 and 18.The aetiological role of HPV in the causation of invasive carcinoma of the uterine cervix is well proved. But its role in the aetiopathogenesis of oropharyngeal carcinoma has been subject of much speculation and conflicting reports. The HPV prevalence rates in oral cancers have been reported to vary from 31 to 74% in different studies.
