As illustrated in Figure 1 below, the year between June 2008 and May 2009 saw a 46 percent decline in the number of diamond transactions compared with the previous year--14 transactions in 2008-09, each costing 1 million dollars or more, compared with 26 in 2007-08--and a 73 percent decline in total acquisition spending on diamonds--210.5 million dollars compared with 760.2 million dollars in 2007-08. A total of 19.7 million carats in resources changed hands in 2008-09, a 91 percent decrease from the 208.4 million carats in 2007-08. The 2008-09 total acquisition cost of 210.5 million dollars was the second consecutive annual decrease after 2007-08's 25 percent drop from the peak of more than 1 billion dollars spent in 2006-07 in 45 transactions. The 2007-08 transactions included Archangel's 225 million dollars acquisition of a 50 percent interest in the litigious Verkhotina diamond field (Grib Pipe) in Arkhangelsk, Russia, from Lukoil, but in January 2009 Archangel announced that it terminated its proposed acquisition. Terminated deals are not included in this analysis. As of April 2009, Archangel had resumed litigation over the rights to the Verkhotina diamond field.
