摘要

Injuries remain an important cause of morbidity and mortality in Australia and account for around 7% of total health-care expenditure.1 Several major factors, including the ageing population, have contributed to the ongoing and increasing cost of trauma care.2 In Australia, the proportion of the population over 65 years of age is expected to increase from 11% currently to 18% by 2020.3 This has major implications for acute injury management. It is well known that elderly patients who are injured are associated with higher mortality and sustain more severe injury, resulting in higher rates of intensive care unit (ICU) admission and in-hospital complications.4-6 These factors contribute to the increased cost of caring for elderly patients who are injured.
