The GMC's appeal to erase Hadiza Bawa-Garba from the register is inhumane, disproportionate, and will not protect the public against further incidents (This Week, 18 November). It is more likely to discourage doctors, especially trainees, from disclosing and learning from errors. Doctors are in a uniquely vulnerable position when working under less than ideal conditions. Unlike airline pilots, who are protected by aviation law not to fly if they have not had their statutory rest or if there are insufficient flight crew, doctors and nurses often feel a moral obligation to cover gaps in the service. Doctors used to feel that they would be protected in law when things went wrong as long as they were doingtheir best-but this no longer seems true.
