Sheath cleaning: It's dirty work, hut if you own a gelding, you have to do it, preferably at least twice each year. The sheath is a pocket of skin that covets and protects the retracted penis. This pocket is prone to a buildup of smegma, which is thecollection of smelly, sticky debris and natural lubricant, The smegma builds up on the penis and around the sheath, causing irritation and swelling. Additional smegma that's trapped in the urethra diverticulum of the penis fotms a hard, marble-like ballcalled a "bean." This bean can lead to urethra blockage, which in turn can cause discomfort, infection and even death. How do you protect your gelding from these penile problems? There are two answers: the easy way and the not-so-easy way.
