Experiments were conducted in Bihar, India, during the 1999-02 rabi seasons, to study the economization of inputs for sustainable higher yield of wheat cultivars PBW 443, HP 1731, HUW 468, PBW 343, HD 2733, HP 1761, UP 262, K 9107, HP 1633, HP 1744, HD 2643 and PBW 373, through furrow irrigated raised bed (FIRB) planting system. The grain yield of the cultivars grown in the FIRB system reduced with a decrease in the tillering ability of the cultivars. Among the timely sown cultivars, HD 2733 recorded a significantly higher number of tillers per square meter, giving the highest grain yield. However, late-sown HP 1744 in 1999/2000 and PBW 373 in 2000/01 was superior than the other cultivars and produced significantly higher number of tillers per square meter and grain yield. The normal yield of the cultivars was achieved under the FIRB system even after reducing the level of chemical fertilizer applications and irrigation to 75 and 70% of the recommended dose, respectively, compared to the flat bed system.
