The European directive on Sustainable Use of Pesticides (SUD) was implemented in the UK in July 2012 with the intention of regulating the application and use of all professional pesticides (for instance weed killers, insecticides and fungicides).The potential impact of the directive in the UK has been mitigated by the work of the Voluntary Initiative (VI) and Produce Assurance Schemes' promotion of best practice in pesticide use over the past decade. The main impacts of the directive are yet tobe felt because of the phased implementation of the major parts of the legislation. However the complexity and reach of the SUD leaves no room for complacency and all farm enterprises need to make sure they have addressed the following issues.
