Now with sole responsibility for marine transport in Istanbul, Istanbul Deniz Otobusleri Sanayi ve Ticaret (IDO) has almost certainly already achieved its aim of becoming the world's largest ferry company. IDO was founded by the Istanbul MetropolitanMunicipality in 1987 to provide waterborne transportation that would help ease the congestion on roads in and around the city. Prior to this, responsibility for ferry operations largely lay with the City Lines Organisation of Turkish Maritime, which operated a fleet of conventional steel ferries, primarily on short intra-city routes. IDO, by contrast, concentrated on longer inter-city routes across the Sea of Marmara utilising high-speed aluminium ferries. Over the years its fleet has steadily increased in number and size through a series of major newbuilding projects.
