Phaseolus vulgaris plants at the primary and trifoliate leaf stages were subjected to chilling treatments for 72 h. During the first 20-30 h of chilling, plants suffered water stress, but subsequently regained turgor. ABA concentrations increased during chilling, with levels starting to rise earlier and reaching higher levels in trifoliate leaves than primary leaves, and in roots at the trifoliate leaf stage than the primary leaf stage.
