摘要

This paper highlights the possibilities of natural regeneration on degraded hillslopes in Southern Wello, Ethiopia, based on an investigation of eight fenced permanent plots in degraded habitats, shrublands and secondary forests. To compare processes of vegetation recovery and succession between the study sites and through time, vegetation data were collected from the tree/shrub and field layers of the eight plots during 1991-4. A general increase in species richness, number of individuals and crown cover was observed, and these increases were more evident in the relatively degraded areas than in the shrublands and secondary forests. This trend is in accordance with the results of short-lived hillside closures witnessed before the change of government in the country in 1991 and implies that there is a possibility of regeneration if the hillslopes can be kept free of human and animal intervention. However, successful regeneration of these hillslopes will depend on clearly defined sustainable development projects and on increasing the participation of the local people.
