摘要

Literature considers that violence in patients with severe mental disorders such as schizophrenia can be related to antisocial traits and/or psychotic symptoms (eg, paranoid delusions). In their article, Elbogen and Johnson reported thatBecause severe mental illness did not independently predict future violent behavior, these findings challenge perceptions that mental illness is a leading cause of violence in the general population. Elbogen and Johnson make an important contribution to this field by studying prospectively more than 34 000 subjects. Yet, beyond some methodological issues (some of those fairly acknowledged by Elbogen and Johnson), such as the fact that (1) violence was assessed by self-report or (2) some analyses included patients with various psychiatric disorders, this article left us with a major concern.
