The minimum wage in South Dakota will increase to $9.30 per hour on January 1, 2020, according to the South Dakota Department of Labor and Regulation. Currently the minimum wage is $9.10 per hour. The minimum wage is adjusted annually by any increase in the cost of living, as measured by the Consumer Price Index published by the U.S. Department of Labor, rounded to the nearest 5 cents. In no case may the minimum wage be decreased. The increase for 2020 reflects a 1.7% increase in the cost of living and is rounded to the nearest 5 cents. The minimum wage for tipped employees will increase to $4.65 per hour, which is half the minimum wage for non-tipped employees. Currently this rate is $4.55 per hour. Wages plus tips must equal at least the state minimum wage. Employers must keep a record of all tips received by employees.
