Daily Document Update: HR Compliance Library, ?46,410, New guidance in New Jersey maps out race discrimination based on hairstyle - STATE LAW, (Oct. 7, 2019)
The guidance explains race discrimination under the New Jersey LAD, focusing on hairstyles closely associated with Black people. In September, after investigating an incident in which a high school wrestler was forced to have his locs cut off on the mat before a wrestling match to avoid forfeiting the match because of his hairstyle, the New Jersey Division on Civil Rights (DCR) issued new “Guidance on Race Discrimination Based on Hairstyle” to explain when treating people differently due to their hairstyle may violate the state’s antidiscrimination laws and to help prevent such discrimination in the future.
