The exotic beauty of Hawaii's landscape, including its spectacular flora, has attracted millions of visitors to the 50th state. Growers of tropical flowers are hoping that the same mystique—along with a reputation for unsurpassed quality—will lure florists on the mainland into purchasing more Hawaiian-grown orchids, anthuriums and other tropical flowers. Competition is keen. A vast array of tropical flowers is available to the U.S. market from other sources, including Thailand, South and Central America, Holland and Africa. As global commerce ramps up, Hawaiian growers have managed to hold their own without significantly increasing market share. According to the U. S. Dept. of Agriculture, the value of Hawaii's 100.7 million dollar floriculture industry has remained relatively unchanged in the last five years; half of that figure represents out-of-state sales.
