Chinese primary aluminum prices rallied in early of June but met great resistance at around 17,200 yuan/tonne(USD2,080). And then, the increase in aluminum supply together with a rebound in SHFE reported stocks draw down prices. The SHFE's most active 0508 aluminum contract closed at 16,460/tonne(USD 1,990) on June 29, the lowest level in recent three months. Some market players attributed the recent drop of the prices to the news that Chinese government may announce to remove the alumina processing trade in the near future. As a matter of fact, the government has an Intention to restrict primary aluminum export. This is why the VAT refunds has been removed and the 5 percent export tariff has been imposed on primary aluminum. It is sure that the alumina processing trade will be eliminated and the only question is that when the government takes step. Some aluminum producers hope the government delay implementation of the new policy because they have signed export contracts with overseas clients and they need some time to complete the export task.
