OULF OF MEXICO - The US government recently decided to drop a ban on raw oysters harvested in the Gulf during warm months of the year as an attempt to reduce the risk of the seaborne bacteria Vibro vulnificus. Vibrio, or V. vulnificus (Vv), is a bacterium in the same family as those that cause cholera. It normally lives in warm seawater and is part of a group of vibrios that are called "halophilic" because they require salt. Sometimes found in raw seafood, it annually kills about 15 people in the United States and can cause kidney failure and excruciating pain.Under a heavy push by political forces from the gulf states of Florida, Louisiana, and Texas, the Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) decided to hold off on the ban indefinitely as it reviews the process in which large and small harvesters gain access to processing facilities in warmer months.
