摘要

Since 1998, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation — with the help of its oyster-gardening volunteers — has planted more than 100 million oysters on sanctuary reefs in the Chesapeake Bay and its rivers. But because of continued harvesting the bay's oyster populations haven't made the recovery hoped for in Maryland. So in early December Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley announced a welcome new direction for the oyster-replenishment program in what has been described as a "strong first step" towards significantly increasing oyster numbers as a critical resource in the bay. The plan will create big oyster sanctuary reefs in certain parts of the bay where harvesting is banned. It is also expected to increase job opportunities for oyster farming in some other areas, while retaining some reefs for watermen to harvest wild oysters.
