Industry fears repeat of repressive west coast legislation. WASHINGTON, DC - Legislation to establish regulations for marine aquaculture in the United States was introduced in December by a California representative in the US Congress, looking to makesure the growing industry balances environmental as well as economic interests. Congresswoman Lois Capps of the US House of Representatives introduced the draft-bill, the National Sustainable Offshore Aquaculture Act 2009 (HR 4363), that would also establish a research program to address data gaps and ensure that offshore aquaculture development proceeds in an ecologically sustainable fashion, according to the announcement. The measure comes on the heels of a recently announced effort by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to develop a national policy for aquaculture in US national waters. In an email to Aquaculture North America, Rep. Capps said the measure is needed to make sure the industry doesn't regionally/develop haphazardly.
