Today, supported by increasing consumer demand for high quality seafood products, aquaculture has become the fastest agricultural growth industry nationwide. Within the U.S., the farm gate value of aquaculture products sold has risen from 45 million dollar in 1974 to over 1billion dollar in 2002, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Aquaculture products from around the world now account for over one-third of total fisheries production. According to statistics from the United Nations Foodand Agriculture Organization, worldwide aquaculture production has been growing at about 10% annually since 1970, compared-to only 1.4% for capture fisheries and 2.8% for land-based meat production. In 2001, total fisheries production was 130 million metric tons and aquaculture production accounted for 38 million metric tons of this total. Nearly 90% of this production comes from Asian countries with a strong tradition in the culture of aquatic animals and cultural acceptance of farm-raised products.
