While there is significant clinical experience using both low- and high-dose Cf-252 brachytherapy, combination therapy using B-10 for neutron capture therapy-enhanced Cf-252 brachytherapy has not been performed. Monte Carlo calculations were performed in a brain phantom (ICRU 44 brain tissue) to evaluate the dose enhancement predicted for a range of B-10 concentrations over a range of distances from a clinical Cf-252 source. These results were compared to experimental measurements and calculations published in the literature. For B-10 concentrations less than or equal to 50 mug/g, the B-10 neutron capture dose enhancement was small in comparison to the Cf-252 fast neutron dose. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
