Magnesium and calcium may influence the risk of atrial fibrillation (AF), the most common cardiac arrhythmia and a leading cause of ischemic stroke, heart failure, and cardiac death. Magnesium exerts antiarrhythmic properties through modulation of myocardial excitability via inhibition of calcium ion entry into the cells.1 Intravenous magnesium has been used for decades to prevent and treat cardiac arrhythmias, and evidence from randomized controlled trials indicates that magnesium administration may reduce AF risk after cardiac surgery.2
