Williams (professors of economics and business, Saint Mary's College of California). Philadelphia: University of Pennsylvania Press, April 2011, 368 pages, $69.95. While much blame for the financial crisis has been targeted at the compensation arrangements that rewarded extreme risk-taking but did not punish failure, the performance of institutional investors has been largely unexamined. Shareholding organizations such as pensions and mutual funds hold considerable sway over the financial industry and exposed themselves and their clientele to extremely complex financial instruments.
