All hype aside, the i3 is a novel combination of lightweight structure, electrified powertrain, and V2G vision. Think of it as a long-term investment to re-invent personal transportation. Will the 2014 i3 live up to the hype that BMW has spun for it during the car's four-year development? Whether the i3 is truly "revolutionary" or "unique in every respect," as company Chairman Dr. Norbert Reithofer and his colleagues have claimed in speeches, presentations, and press releases, is debatable. But there's no denying that the automaker has made a major commitment in terms of design, engineering, and technology (not to mention an estimated $1B investment) to re-think the automobile as an electrified platform via BMW's new "i" sub-brand, the catchphrase for which is "born electric" to underscore the fact that it is a dedicated platform for electrified vehicles.
