Peter Nunn continues the story of his family firm in the period of the Massey-Harris-Ferguson merger. By the early 1950s, Frank J Nunn & Sons Ltd was a well-established and respected agricultural engineering concern with agencies for several leading makes of equipment. The firm, with its main depot at the Blackbourne Iron Works in the Suffolk village of Elmswell, had been founded by Frank J Nunn in 1909. Frank's three sons, Edward, Bill and Peter, were now managing the company, although their father, now in his seventies, continued to take an active interest in the business. A Massey-Harris dealer since 1934, Frank J Nunn & Sons had recently been awarded the sole Massey franchise for West Suffolk - a move that precipitated the opening of a branch depot at Kennett, near Newmarket, in 1952. But changes were on the horizon: in August 1953, it was announced that Massey-Harris and Ferguson were to merge - and the ramifications of this unification had more than just global implications. The ripples it created filtered down to the grassroots level, and would have a significant effect on dealerships, such as Frank J Nunn & Sons, for years to come.
