The accounting records for my husband's small business are tracked very neatly on a three-year-old entry-level version of an accounting software package that was grabbed off the shelf for a small cost. I will not go into bat for the company by tellingyou the brand because I know enough about the alternatives to realise they would be working just as well, with roughly the same limitations. When it comes to accounting software, small businesses are generally not prepared or able to pay for all the bells and whistles that a super-duper customised solution could offer, so they look to the affordable generics. There is a battalion of software solutions available that will track your accounting records quite nicely. In my opinion, the important part is not which one you choose, but rather what you do with it.
