摘要

Trees and woods are recognised as of huge value, and in a diversity of ways. Yet how this value is assessed, evaluated and perhaps costed is a distinctly thorny issue. The debate ranges from the view that these are too precious to be assigned a 'value', to in-depth discussions about the types of models and value systems to be applied. Clearly there are aspects of trees and woods that lend themselves to economic evaluation and others that do not. How to value trees and woods has exercised the minds ofacademics and other professionals for decades. In the debate, the Arboricultural Journal has often led the way. Indeed since HELLIWELL (1967a) in the first ever issue, HELLIWELL (1967b (2000)), and HELLIWELL (1978) this has been a 'hot topic'. The discussion continues, as the papers in this volume and the fierce debate at the 2006 York Conference demonstrate. In this issue we present papers by Cullen and by Price that address critical issues in this debate; and invite responses and further submissionson the topic.
