The Crowood Press 29.95 The purpose of this book is to provide students of forestry, horticulture and arboriculture with a textbook on trees which should be of use up to firstyear degree level. As such it is aimed at the reading lists of college and university courses, college libraries and bookshops, as well as those already working in the field and those with a general interest in the subject. The flyleaf tells us that theauthor was until his retirement in 1998, Head of School, Forestry and Woodland Management at the National School of Forestry, Newton Rigg College. The book is divided into 15 chapters, five of which are entitled The Biology of Woody Plants I-V. This isunhelpful in a textbook - in fact the chapters deal with external tissues, reproductive parts, cells and tissues, growth and seed germination. Other chapters are concerned with the benefits of trees, nomenclature, identification, the uses of trees, theirmanagement, pests diseases and disorders, propagation, the soil environment and the planting and establishment of trees. This provides a structure within which most arboricultural issues could be addressed and, with a few exceptions, the book does attempt to provide information in these areas. The author has provided numerous black and white photographs and line drawings throughout the book to illustrate the text, and there are eight pages of colour photographs. The relevance of the photographs to thetext is not always obvious, however the line drawings are clear and helpful.
