摘要

Many people in Swaziland live in chronic poverty and HIV/Aids is taking a heavy toll and creating thousands of orphans. Women are particularly disadvantaged and there has been little government help to lift them out of poverty. In 1992, Gone Rural wasformed as a business company to help a group of women in a rural community to generate a sustainable income. The company is now making a big impact. Gone Rural was set up by the late Jenny Thorne who realised the potential of Swazi women and their skills in creating hand-craft products that could generate income on a sustainable basis. Initially, a group of 30 women joined Jenny Thome and now the enterprise has evolved into an international company providing income for over 730 rural women, spread across 13 communities, and supplying products that they have made to more than 1,000 retail outlets across 32 countries worldwide.
