ab:China is projected to export 2.5 million tons of corn in 1996/97, 1.5 million tons more than forecast last month. Due to an expected slowdown in demand from the feed industry, the corn import forecast for Taiwan was lowered one-half million tons, to 5.5 million tons. Iran surpasses Egypt and Japan to become the world's top importer of wheat as a 500,000 ton increase brings forecasted imports to 6.5 million tons. The forecast for calendar year 1997 rice exports by the United States was raised thismonth from 2.3 to 2.4 million tons. Wheat exports from Australia move further into record territory and are now expected to reach 17.0 million tons for the year. A 750,000 ton reduction in Russian wheat import needs prompts a similar decrease in projected exports from Kazakstan, now pegged at 2.3 million tons. China's wheat imports were cut by 500,000 tons to 3.5 million tons based upon the slow pace of business done to date. A one million ton increase in the export forecast for wheat from the United States more than offsets a 300,000 ton rise in projected imports. FOREIGN COUNTRIES' POLICIES AND PROGRAMS: European Community begins debate on how much land to set aside in 1998/99.
