Sources say that Northeast Asia's propylene market may get off to a slow start this year, as new capacity coming online may create a lot of length in the market. In Nov. 2016, Ningbo Fuji Petrochemical started up its new 600K-mt/y propane dehydrogenation (PDH) plant in Zhejiang province in Eastern China, and while the plant is integrated with downstream units, it will have a surplus of about 200K mt/y of propylene, assuming all units run at full capacity. Additionally, sources noted that propylene produces have not scheduled much planned maintenance in Jan. or Feb. 2017, which could add to the length. "We are expecting to see longer supply from China and Korea next year," said one propylene buyer in China. "As such, we hope to negotiate a better contract for 2017." Other market sources estimated that South Korea's propylene exports would probably increase slightly from 1.55MM mt in 2016 to 1.6MM mt in 2017. Japan's exports are expected to hold steady at 1MM mt.
