Sources say that US olefins prices can be expected to remain weak for much of 2016. According to data from the American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers (AFPM) trade group, US steam crackers made 14.9B lbs (6.78MM mt) of ethylene in 3Q 2015, up from 14.4B lbs (6.55MM mt) the quarter before and from 13.8B lbs (6.27MM mt) in 3Q 2014. Meanwhile US spot prices fell to a seven-year low in Dec. 2015, falling to 17.75￠/lb by mid-month. Ethylene futures are currenuy in contango (Jan. material is trading at a 2￠/lb premium to Dec, and 2Q material at a 4.0-4.5￠/lb premium) due to upcoming turnarounds, but sources not that those projects will increase total US capacity, implying continued weakness further out.
