One of my friends in general practice has that rarest of gifts, interesting opinions. He has a challenging suggestion: that top medical students intercalate a year in a trade college studying plumbing or joinery, rather than spending time on the metabolism of protactinium in osteopenic pygmy guinea pigs in a science degree. His reasons are twofold: firstly, the medical hoi polloi would be spared the pulled faces of academic supremacy; secondly, we could defend the profession from the common jibe that we are "bright but can't change a light bulb." He goes on to explain that doctors on house calls might not know the diagnosis but could at least offer to fix a dripping tap. His other big idea is that joiners could do a year's conversion course to orthopaedic surgery, but here we disagree, as I don't believe the course would need to be that long.There is another idea about, that the duration of GP appointments should be extended from 10 to 15 minutes. The argument goes that this would highlight more psychological conditions, allow us to manage complex medical problems better, and, in the long run, reduce consultation rates.
