ON FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 19,2021, PRIME MINISTER NARENDRA MODI FORMALLY HANDED OVER the indigenously-built Light Combat Helicopters (LCH) to Air Chief Marshal V R Chaudhari, Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Indian Air Force (IAF). This was done in a ceremony known as 'Rashtra Raksha Samarpan Parv' that was held in Jhansi to celebrate the 193rd birth anniversary of Rani Laxmi Bai. The LCH has been designed and developed by the Indian aerospace and defence major Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). It is a twin-engine helicopter in the 5.8 tonne class and features a narrow fuselage that has a tandem configuration for pilot and co-pilot or a Weapon System Operator (WSO). It incorporates advanced technologies and stealth features such as reduced radar and infra-red signatures and crashworthy landing gear for better survivability. Its design provides for effective combat roles and to carry out tasks such as destruction of enemy air defence, counter insurgency, search and rescue, anti-tank and counter surface force operations. The LCH is expected to boost the nation's capability to remain self-reliant. Earlier on, Ajay Kumar Secretary in the Ministry of Defence had said that the LCH is the only attack helicopter that can land and take off at an altitude of 5,000 metres or 16,400 feet above the surface of the Earth with a considerable load of weapons and fuel.
