Demand shot up 23 between 2010 and 2012, with the 61MM mt/y of demand posted in 2012 currently-forecast to reach 137MM mt/y worldwide by 2022, with growth to be driven primarily by China. According to IHS global director of syngas chemicals Mike Nash, the US shale boom and the resultant abundance of cheap natural gas is currently driving the installation of new methanol production capacity in the US, while in China, cheap methanol is being derived from coal. Said Nash, "Methanol is a key option for monetizing gas or coal." Globally, methanol demand is growing at a rate of approximately 3/y, while in China, that rate is closer to 12/y; indeed, methanol consumption in China is expected to skyrocket from 31MM mt/y in 2012 to 97MM mt/y in 2022, with fuels applications constituting the major demand driver in the Asian nation. China currently constitutes the world's largest methanol producer, possessing 54 of global production capacity, although the country produced just 43 (26.5MM mt) of global production last year—the country currently utilizes just 50 of its existing production capacity. Like the world at large, which has added 14.3 of methanol production capacity since 2007 alongside demand growth of 8.6/y, China is closing in on the end of a period of long-term capacity expansion. According to Nash, methanol is likely to be used increasingly in gasoline blending, although likely not in the US; as feedstock for biodiesel production; and as dimethyl ether (DME) in place of bunker fuel in low-sulfur fuel areas.
