Saudi Railways Organization (SRO) operates a network of railways with a total length of 1,412 kilometres.The company transports annually more than 1.3 million passengers and 350 thousand containers, which means more than 80 of the containers directed to Riyadh Province through Dammam Port, and two million tons of ordinary movable goods which require about 500 thousand trucks to be shipped on the road. SRO plans to expand its passenger and goods transport activity by about 60 from of its current levels. By 2040, under the Saudi Railway Master Plan the railway infrastructure projects need USD 97.6 billion until 2040, to meet freight and passenger mobility demands. Gulf Cooperation Council Railway Project The route of the GCC rail project starts from Kuwait via Dammam in Saudi Arabia to Bahrain through the proposed line to be built parallel to the King Fahd Causeway. The total project length is approximately 2116 km, and the length of the track inside Saudi Arabia is totalling 663 km. In 2017 the GCC countries discussed about the construction of the project. Last year, an agreement was reached in principle to delay the 2018 completion date until 2021. The countries involved in the project are: Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman and Qatar. The Secretariat General of the Gulf Cooperation Council said that the project will be implemented without obstacles. The decision for the development of the GCC railway network was adopted to deepen countries' trade relations, and to form a sustainable mobility across the region. This ambitious project is supported by all GCC countries and all related authorities, in order to achieve it. The countries involved want to encourage the private sector to invest in railways. The GCC railway project value is estimated at USD 240 billion, of which USD 69 billion is the value of the projects under construction (in the first quarter of 2017). In 2017 the European Commission announced that it will sign a Memorandum of Understanding with Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) to support railway system development by providing regulatory provisions for the construction and operation of GCC's network.
