A development of the railway transport system will be a key target of the Vietnam Railway Transport Development Strategy towards 2020. The strategy aims to build a new high-speed 1.435m-gauge rail line and to electrify the North-South railway system, according to which priority will be given to busy routes such as Ha Noi-HCM City, Ha Noi-Vinh and HCM City-Nha Trang. The existing railway routes will be upgraded to increase the average train speed to between 80kmph and 90kmph for passenger trains and between 50kmph and 60kmph for goods trains. The services on the other routes, including the Yen Vien-Lao Cai, Gia Lam-Hai Phong and Ha Noi-Thai Nguyen routes, will be upgraded and the transport capacity and quality in the north will be improved. The long-term strategy should prioritize the focus on investing in railway infrastructure based on combining rehabilitation and upgrading of existing infrastructure with investing in constructing new rail infrastructures, developing railway network to connect with major sea ports, industrial parks and bordering countries to promote international integration, rapidly developing urban railway network to be a core of public transport in major cities, in short time, giving priority to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
