Global major BP will divest its reported $1.5B US wind energy business, the latest in a string of renewable energy divestitures which have left the company's renewable future almost solely in the hands of ethanol. The sale is likely intended to help fund costs associated with the company's 2010 deepwater oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico; although BP has sold assets worth $38B over the past three years to fund cleanup efforts, the company is still settling civil and class action lawsuits related to the disaster. In the wake of the spill, BP has focused on downsizing and streamlining operations worldwide. A BP spokesperson has suggested that the divestiture—to consist of US wind assets including 16 wind farms with a combined 2.6K MW of power generating capacity and projects including a combined 2K MW of nearly completed wind farms—does not represent a move away from renewable energy for the company, which still maintains biofuel research projects in the US and UK, as well as ethanol production operations in the UK and Brazil. But after 40 years of solar energy development, BP exited that industry in 2011; and earlier, in 2007, the company pulled out of a $500MM Scottish carbon capture and storage (CCS) scheme. BP also last year pulled out of a $300MM cellulosic ethanol plant project, which was intended to launch commercial-scale production in the US state of Florida, even as it announced plans to expand a Brazilian sugarcane-based ethanol project at a cost of $350MM. Despite the ongoing downsizing of its renewables presence, BP did suggest in Jan. that renewable energy is likely to constitute 6 of the global energy palette by 2030.
