In theory, hydrogen is an attractive energy source, mainly because when combusted it emits H2O rather than CO2-In practice, this advantage is negated by the CO2 emissions involved in producing the gas, which has not been found to occur naturally in substantial quantities. According to IFP Energies Nouvelles (IFPEN), however, there may be natural hydrogen sources that may prove to be an economical source of fuel and the firm is currently studying these potendal sources. Since the 1970s, researchers have been aware of natural hydrogen emissions from volcanic systems on the ocean floor, but the great depth of these systems has rendered the resources uneconomical to develop.
