We tend to think of shorebirds as accomplished long-distance migrants, well capable of crossing vast oceans, but the Northern Lapwing Vanellus vanellus, the most widely- distributed and mobile member of the Vanellinae, is different. Its spring and autumn journeys are largely over land and individuals are not as dependent on patchy, coastal food resources as species such as Dunlin Calidris alpina or Bar-tailed Godwits Limosa lapponica. As a consequence, perhaps one might expect Lapwings to behave differently to more tightly constrained species when it comes to annual movements? In a recent paper, Gotz Eichhorn and colleagues1 reveal that there is a great deal of variation within migratory strategies of Dutch-breeding individuals.
