EU countries'total net imports of wood pellets jumped by 44pc on the year to 4.7mn t in 2013,according to data submitted by individual nations to EU statistics body Euro-stat.The bulk of those imports was concentrated in just six countries,with the UK,Denmark and Italy the clear leaders. But there were signs of some new trade patterns emerging, as suppliers sought access to those growing markets. UK net imports more than doubled to 3.3mn t last year, but remained centred on a handful of sources.Supplies from the US increased more than threefold to 1.6mn t,and those from Canada rose by 68pc to 1.4mn t.The UK's main Euro-pean suppliers were Latvia and Portugal,shipping 100,000t to 200,000t more than in 2012.
