In its 2012 annual report, the Central Bank of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) indicates that, according to its preliminary estimates for the balance of payments, the country's current account and external trade surpluses increased appreciably last year in relation to the final figures for 2011, some of which have been revised in relation to initial estimates (AOG, 2 June, 2012). The current account surplus soared by 30.6% to Dh 244.42 billion ($66.6 billion) in 2012 from Dh 187.11 billion the year before. This outcome was partly attributable to a 20.3% rise in the foreign trade surplus to Dh 470.9 billion last year from Dh 391.5 billion in 2011, driven by increases of 5.8% in the value of oil and gas exports and 35.9% in non-hydrocarbon exports. Hydrocarbon export earnings thus rose to Dh 433.65 billion ($118.2 billion) in 2012 from Dh 409.9 billion the year before, consisting of Dh 345.1 billion of crude oil (up from Dh 332.9 billion). Taking account of re-exports as well, the UAE's total exports rose from Dh 1,109.2 billion to Dh 1,285.8 billion from one year to the next, while imports increased from Dh 717.8 billion to Dh 814.9 billion.
