Over the past month, prices for US HMS 12 (80:20) in Turkiye have increased by $22/t to $433/t CFR. Meanwhile, the quotes of European material of the same grade have risen to $428/t CFR. The destructive effects of the earthquake will drive steel output and scrap consumption in Turkiye considerably down. Not to mention the high death toll, the disaster has also affected numerous industrial facilities, including those located in Iskenderun, one of the country's largest metallurgical regions with over 15 million tpy of steelmaking capacities. Besides, significant damage has been caused to the infrastructure, which will inevitably result in logistics issues. The energy infrastructure has also been severely damaged. As a result, Turkiye's steel sector is unlikely to promptly recover in the coming months, Metal Expert believes. In the past three months, the country's steel output has totalled 2.55 million tpm, down 23 year-on-year.
